Remote and Alternate Work
McLennan Community College permits eligible non-faculty employees to participate in approved Remote Work and Alternate Work Schedule arrangements under College Administrative Procedure DJ-V — Remote and Alternate Work Schedule.
The College procedure is authoritative and should be reviewed before requesting or participating in either arrangement.
Remote and alternate work arrangements require prior approval and are intended to support operational needs, uninterrupted service, employee flexibility, and work continuity. They are not an entitlement or automatic employment benefit.
Remote Work
Remote work allows an eligible employee to perform approved work from an authorized location other than campus.
The standard College remote-work arrangement allows an eligible employee to work remotely one day per week. Arrangements for more than one day per week require additional approval under DJ-V. The procedure also allows certain non-recurring exceptions with the required College approval.
Eligibility
College procedure considers:
- Department and position needs
- Ability to perform the work remotely
- Employee performance
- Ability to work independently
- Time-management skills
- Job knowledge
- Work history
- Availability of required technology
Employees using the standard Remote Work procedure must meet the eligibility requirements in DJ-V, including having been in the position on site for a minimum of six months.
Remote work provided as a disability accommodation is handled separately through Human Resources and the accommodation process.
Remote Work Agreement
Remote work must be documented through the College's Remote Work Agreement process and receive the approvals required by DJ-V before the employee begins working remotely.
Changes to the approved schedule or remote work location also require advance review and approval.
A Remote Day Is a Workday
The expectations for a remote workday are substantially the same as for an on-campus workday.
Employees must:
- Work the approved schedule.
- Be accessible through normal communication methods.
- Participate in meetings and calls.
- Respond to customers and coworkers.
- Complete assigned work.
- Follow established meal periods.
- Protect College information.
- Use College equipment appropriately.
- Follow all College and ISS procedures.
College procedure specifically requires remote employees to remain accessible through telephone, email, and other institutional communication methods during agreed work hours. Employees may also be required to return to a College facility on short notice when circumstances require it.
Remote Work Location
Employees are responsible for maintaining an appropriate approved remote work environment, including reliable internet access.
College information and equipment must be protected regardless of where work occurs.
The employee should use the approved remote location identified in the Remote Work Agreement. Changes require approval according to DJ-V. (DJ-V)
Remote Work and Leave
Remote work is not a substitute for leave.
If an employee is not working during established work hours, the appropriate leave should be used according to College procedure. (DJ-V)
Remote work is also not intended to serve as a long-term substitute for dependent care. (DJ-V)
Alternate Work Schedules
An Alternate Work Schedule changes an employee's approved starting or ending times while maintaining the required weekly work hours.
Alternate schedules must support operational efficiency, uninterrupted service, adequate department staffing, and work continuity. College operational needs take precedence when determining whether an arrangement is appropriate. (DJ-V)
Alternate schedules require the approval process established in DJ-V.
Arrangements May Change
Remote and alternate work arrangements may be modified or ended when department coverage, job responsibilities, performance, or other operational needs change.
Managers and employees should periodically evaluate whether the arrangement continues to serve the College and ISS effectively. (DJ-V)
Connection to Our Values
People Matter because appropriate flexibility can help employees while still meeting College needs.
Communication Matters because remote and alternate schedules only work when availability and expectations are clear.
Integrity Matters because employees are trusted to perform assigned work regardless of location.
Excellence Matters because flexibility must still result in reliable, high-quality service.
