Evacuation, Shelter-in-Place, and Lockdown

Emergency conditions may require employees to evacuate, shelter in place, or remain in a secured location.

Employees should follow instructions provided through official emergency notifications, Campus Police, Emergency/Risk Management personnel, or MCC CERT members.

Evacuation

When directed to evacuate:

  • Leave the affected building or area promptly.
  • Follow established evacuation routes and instructions from emergency personnel.
  • If it is safe to do so, take readily accessible personal belongings and secure sensitive materials.
  • Be aware of individuals who may require assistance.
  • Do not return until authorized to do so.

Shelter-in-Place

When instructed to shelter in place:

  • Remain inside the building.
  • Move away from exterior windows and glass when appropriate.
  • Follow instructions from CERT members or other emergency personnel.
  • Remain in the designated location until an all-clear or additional instruction is received.

Lockdown

A lockdown may be ordered because of weapons, an intruder, nearby police activity, hazardous contamination, terrorism, or another life-threatening condition.

During a lockdown, employees should follow the College's current Lockdown Procedure and Emergency Management instructions. The College procedure directs occupants to secure or barricade doors when possible, silence phones, remain out of sight, and stay secured until further instructions or an official all-clear is given.

ISS employees should not leave a secured location merely to protect equipment, respond to a technical problem, or report to another ISS work area.
