Red Banner on Email

Overview

When email comes from outside MCC, the system adds a red warning banner at the top of the message. This does not mean the email is dangerous by default, but it is a reminder to pause, review the content, and make sure you trust the sender before clicking anything.

Getting Started

The banner helps you stay aware of messages that do not come from a @students.mclennan.edu or mclennan.edu address so you can double‑check that the email is safe.

What the Banner Looks Like

The red banner includes the following message:

External Message This email is from outside MCC. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the source of this email and know the content is safe. Never enter your credentials in a linked form.

How to Respond When You See the Banner

Seeing the banner simply means the message came from outside the college. Use it as a reminder to stay cautious.

  1. Check the sender’s email address to see if you recognize who it is from.
  2. Look for spelling errors, suspicious links, or unexpected attachments.
  3. If the message seems unusual or asks for personal information, contact the Help Desk before taking any action.

Additional Details

The banner is only a caution. Many legitimate emails from partners, vendors, or students using personal accounts will display this warning. More information on knowing how to detect a phishing email can be found in the article, Recognize a Phishing Attempt.
